RE: Thor Freedom Spirit

I moved from a Jayco to the same TT you are considering. VERY happy I did it in spite of what others may think of Thor's quality. I have used my 2008 FS180 for approx 22 nights this year & haven't found so much as a loose screw yet. My opinion is that the Freedom Spirit is every bit as good or better build as the Jayco. I have found the additional ground clearance & much heavier duty frame to be a big plus. I had a few issues with my Jayco I was not happy about, such as the cost cutting way of draining the tub to the already very small black tank, stripped screws on cupboard door hinges, unfinished & very rough wood seat bottoms (under the cushions), unprotected hot water tank plastic lines in the storage compartment (very succeptable to damage from stored items), & even very small details like no latches to hold open outside storage doors, crank windows that needed to be pushed closed from the outside to close tightly. The front window had a fiberglass cover that was all cracked around the latches & needed to be replaced. Can't just replace the cover, needed to replace the entire window. The service from the dealer was non-existant. I had a problem with it last spring, contacted the dealer who was to contact the factory for repair authorization. That was in May '08. Emailed them pictures of the problem to forward to Jayco per the dealers instructions. I haven't heard from the dealer or Jayco yet (Nov '08). They have blown me off. This was a covered warranty issue. NO more Jayco for me. With the Thor Freedom Spirit FS180 I have had ZERO problems or issues with it & it even cost LESS than the Jayco.

RE: WHAT REALLY is the difference.

Hey, if you camping at a state park & go on the computer, you can get all kinds of Spam for FREE. This will lower your overall camping costs even more.
Good point about the actual cost of fuel being so little for a 200 mile trip & most trips for me are even less. Food for thought.....

Ford F650 pickup???

On my way home from work today, I passed a new Ford F650 pickup truck (diesel). This is NOT a mistake in my reading the typical Ford chrome plaque mounted in the usual place on the front fender that lists the model. I was next to it at a traffic light. Where do these come from? I didn't know they were being built. This thing was HUGE. It was a reg cab model, alloy wheels, two tone paint (white over dark gray). I was drooling the rest of the way home.....

RE: Maybe It's Just Me

I originally bought a TT with one of the big reasons of having my own facilities. The only time I will use a park facility is if I am already out for a walk & mom nature calls me, otherwise, I use my own.

RE: Hamburg NY Camping World Closed

This has already been posted twice before. I posted it here (10/9/08) the day before it officially closed for business. Not new news, but still sad to see it go since I bought my current TT new there last May. Now I'll need to go to Churchville for any warranty repair work. Thankfully, I haven't needed any yet.

RE: Fiberglass "blister" - UPDATED

I've had this type of construction in the past & why I bought our current TT with aluminum panels. I am aware there can be other issues associated with aluminum, but this will never be one of them.

Another Camping World closing

Camping World located in Hamburg NY just announced that they are closing. Staff is already down to a skeleton crew. All trailers & RV's will be gone within a few weeks, & most likely even sooner than that. It was their largest facility in NY state. I bought my TT there last May. Another sign of the times.

RE: Gas Mileage with Jayco Soprt 199

See my signature vehicle. I used to tow a Jayco Sport 165 & got about 10 mpg. My truck has the same engine & 3:55 gears you have. Now I get about 9 mpg. Thinking about regearing it to 4:10's.

RE: Overnight - Why stuck on WalMart - think out of the box

Once when my DW & I were on our way up north to Tobermory, Ont, I needed a spot to pull in for the night. Not many places available as there is only one main route going north. The ONLY shopping plazas are located in the southern part of the peninsula. We found an RV dealership & pulled in, backed out TT up next to the other NEW TT's in the lot & stayed the night. Ours was only a year old & still looked new. It was directly across the street from a police station. We kept the lights off & were on our way the next morning before business hours. Probably do the same next time.

RE: Can anyone recommend a reputable dealer in Upstate NY

I purchased a Jayco TT from Buffalo RV & when it developed a leak & damaged floor because of it, I called them & they asked me to email some pictures of the damage which I did. They said they would contact the factory for authorization to do the repair & would notify me. That was back in May. They STILL haven't called me back. Service like this is why I would NEVER, EVER, deal with them again.

Measured TT length

Do all manufacturers list their TT lengths by the box length or do some manufacturers include the hitch in their advertised TT length. I already know that they round up or down their advertised length & that is not in question.

RE: Aerodynamics or style?

Mileage could be improved somewhat. Look at Airstream trailers. MUCH more aerodynamic than a square box TT.
Next time you are out driving, stick your hand out the window with your fingers together, pointed up & palm into the wind & feel the air resistance. Next, make a fist into the wind. Feel the difference? Now think of it this way, how easy would it be trying to hold a 4x8 sheet of plywood up while driving into the wind. Not so easy. Most trailer fronts are almost twice that in square footage. That makes for A LOT of wind resistance, resulting in less mpg in comparison to pulling the same length Airstream TT. The only problem I have with Airstream TT's is $$$. The difference in $$$ buys a lot of gas.

RE: New Camper

I was also warned about issues with the TT (Thor product) in my sig prior to buying, but went ahead anyways. To date we have camped in it for 20 nights since getting it in June. I have had exactly 0 problems or issues with it, no returns to the dealer & have found every screw to still be tight. I have towed it approximately 700 miles. What more could I ask for?

RE: tail gate theft

Put a stainless steel screw hose clamp around the hinge with the slotted opening that allows it to be removed. Most thieves will not bother taking the time it would require to remove (with a screwdriver) it to get the tailgate.

RE: Dodge - Which is the fancier package SLT or Laramie?

Laramie....The Laramie may have more mileage or not be in as good condition for it to be priced at $1000 less. All things equal it should be valued higher. I own an SLT.

4 mile Creek State Park. I will be there next weekend also. (Labor Day weekend). However, ALL electric sites are taken for the holiday weekend. May be some non-electric sites are still available. They can accommdate large rigs at this park. I too am reserved in a non-electric site.
